For now. Eventually humanity will evolve past this level of thinking.

Religon for example will likely most/all of its hold when humanity conquers death through technology ... that won't happen for our generation, but 200, 300, 400 years into the future? Who knows. Look how much we have advanced in the last 150 years alone (airplanes, cars, computer chips, internet, space travel, cloning, nuclear power, our understanding of physics and the universe, etc. etc.).

The main reason religon persists is because we still can't answer what happens after death and it's very difficult for humans to comprehend that.

"Eventually humanity will evolve past this level of thinking. "

i disagree... as i said it is because of the intrinsic nature of man

it stems from how we build our self esteem and world view

self esteem for the religious person is rooted in there being a plan for the world ordained by god... so once they follow their religious teachings they can be sure that they will be rewarded by god when they die

conversely self esteem for many atheists ( and this is just my personal perspective ) is rooted in them believing that scientists have through their experimentation ascertained a comprehensive enough understanding of the universe to make certain conclusions... such as there beling no god

both ideologies in my personal opinion are greatly flawed... the overarching problem is how the vast, vast majority of people tie their self esteem to an ideology and as a result are unable to analyse the world around them without filtering it through that ideology

but again this is an intrinsic property of people... and its useful in terms of socialising and making bonds with our peers through common ideas but when taken too far it becomes a serious problem

it is not a problem that can be simply evolved out of since it forms the basis for a lot of the social interaction we take part in

and funny enough i'm pretty sure that the type of atheistic society that modern society is on the path to building is going to be just as oppressive as religious societies of the past... i say that for various reasons one being the rise of ideologies like the feminism of our current era in conjunction with atheism

i'm just using this as one example of many... but it just amazes me that the feminists of our current era are demanding a utopia where every woman should be safe and not have to take precaution, while simultaneously shaming religious people for wanting to believe in a heaven... when you see it for what it is you can't help but laugh

Eventually humanity will overcome death.

Then religon will pretty much become worthless, why worship a god for an afterlife, when you don't even need an afterlife to begin with.

It's a crutch humanity needs for now because death is a trauamatic emotion for most, we need some way to process that which comforts us.

I'm talking in a meta-sense though, our generation is just one chain link on a very large chain, one that will extend much further once we're long gone.
