Continuing from previous post.
The uptreaming process is basically introducing values of the upmarket to the downmarket in a gradual fashion so as to not scare them away from the industry.
Examples.
Super Mario Galaxy:
To new gamers who where introduced by the downmarket games(I'll call them the Wiisports crowd for brevity) winning and losing was realized when one or two actions took place, such as winning when a single boxing, bowling game etc was completed . Satisfaction was achieved quickly however sooner or later these feats will seem unrewarding as time goes by since no increase in satisfaction can occur when the tasks are fixed in length.
Downstreaming mechanism:
The upmarket are shown how effective motion control can be in platforming.
Upstreaming mechanism:
Completing a single objective would have meant that they won the game in Wiisports, however in this case all they get is a star.A star of many to be collected before they can actually achieve their final goal.Since the quest is longer their satisfaction upon completion as a result would be greater and they then begin to understand and appreciate what the fuss is all about(Ever had a parent asking you why you're still playing a certain game?).This is something that would have never occured if they weren't introduced to gaming by Wii Sports in the first place. Not only that but like any drug these gamers are now going to look for similiarly tiered games to get their fix and so games of this tier start to increase as we have been seeing with Brawl and another but far more dangerous game(to PS3 and 360).
Mario Kart Wii:
Downstreaming mechanism:
Despite the pissing and moaning from the upmarket about the dumbing down of the game etc. fans of the series are addicts and still bought the game because "IT'S MARIO KART! OMGWTFBBQ!". Thanks to a mechanism introduced that made steering with the wheel more beneficial than the standard controller most were forced to use the wheel. After finally experiencing it they then realized the merit of the control method and now can't live without an experience that can only be emulated easily on the Wii.
Upstreaming mechanism:
New gamers are introduced to such experiences such as online and competion(leaderboards, rankings, controls being familiar to real life for almost instant transition) putting more stress on the players as well as a more rewarding experience for your achievements. This competitive enviroment is something that is introduced but not forced upon them and due to the ease at which this occurs allows them to enjoy it without being intimidated.
So here we see games that upstream the market. However as noted above these upstream games also downstream as well.Nintendo has called these bridge games.
Bridge games are games that connect the upmarket to the downmarket and like any bridge allows people from one side to cross over and experience the other. We hear game journalists spout crap about Mario Kart's goal is to allow "hardcore and casuals to play together" but this is bullshit. Why bother to do this.As can seen from above "hardcore" and "casuals" playing together isn't the real goal it is just a consequence of something much greater(Massive sales in the short term and unquestionable brand loyalty in the long term by both markets).
But I see that you mentioned that the upmarket hates the Wii.If so then why are these bridge games carrying out their goal perfectly by harnessing both markets with ease.
The answer is simple and is one that the gaming media would never admit. Are you ready?
