What exactly was the EU preventing them from doing before because it seems to me they were doing "whatever the fuck they wanted" before hand. They didn't even adopt the Euro currency. 

EU was formed because it makes sense to have one more singular entity instead of like 20 different little countries all within 90 minutes flying time of each other.

Almost like a united group of ... states ... you might say. Gee, what a bizarre concept. 

The only real thing that had an actual impact on our society may have been the odd rules and regulations EU comes up with, like determining how much power a vacuum cleaner can use and other crap like that. Yet our borders were ours to control, our currency was ours and the immigration was fine (as EU immigrants mostly wanted to be here to work and contributed to the ecommony). 

Now watch as the next PM has to do a deal to trade with the EU and it comes with the Freedom of Movement act.

Yeah it pretty much seems like the UK was getting basically any/all benefit of being in the EU, without actually basically any of the downsides. They didn't even pay for any of the Greek debt stuff.
