Thats what I keep saying, they're not. Mechanically UC1 and UC4 are nothing alike, from shooting to even the character movements, open level design, everything is an evolution, Drake has now actual weight to him. Gears 4 looks the same shootey game Gears 1 was.

The Gears series has similarly tweaked its cover, shooting, melee, and destructibility systems as it has progressed. Both franchises have iterated, but neither has really diverged from the templates set in 2006/2007.
