Nintendo isn't barely stable. That being said, if the hardware division is having poor sales, like WiiU (And let's hypotetically say NX follows suit), they should ditch hardware altogether and focus on software, which clearly doesn't have any problem being profitable, as their ventures (like Splatoon) are multimillion sellers.
