I've not played a jrpg in years... I blame me being really crap at them and not having the patience, but the one I did play back on the PS2 and really enjoyed was Shadow Hearts (I think). It had this thing called a judgement wheel or something. It was pretty awesome and the wheel added some sense of control to the hit and miss when doing attacks. It doesn't make sense when you are shooting at a 100ft tall and 30ft wide enemy and you miss.

Shadow Hearts battle system has a close tune for The Legend of Dragoon battle system.
The addition system on LoD had the same concept, but not on a wheel, each individual attack had to be manually connected on a similar way (it was matching square sizes at the right time on LoD) so each hit would connect and the combo could be made, each combo having it's own hitting pattern, and also enemies could counter attack on every point on your combo aside from the first hit connection so you had to always be paying attention to prevent their counters (normal hits were X, counters were O).

Sounds like a better system than Shadow Hearts. In that case Pervy Sensei, I must go with LoD.
