That makes them exactly like everyone else, which hurt them with gamecube.  Unique + Something people want is when they had the most success.

The Wii U's gamepad is unique.

The Wii motes for the wii, raised intrest amoung the casuals.

Wii was all 3 (unique, raised intrest, and something people wanted).

If you ask alot of Wii U owners, most will tell you they like the gamepad (I prefer the pro controller).

So the gamepad is something people want, but the general public isnt intrested in it.

Unique + something people want, isnt enough.

Casuals lost interest in wii's uniqueness after a couple months/years. A lot of wiis ended up taking the dust on their shelves (especially among non gamers) which might be one of the reason the wii to wii u retention rate is so low.

Interest on launch is hype, but a console need to keep people interested during the whole generation.
