With the Wii U, Nintendo gave third parties that power. They positioned the console as an additional option to PS and Xbox, a device that will play the same games. Of course, such a product cannot afford to not have the games then. Third parties were positive about the Wii U when the system was unveiled.

Third parties didn't hold the power to sink the Wii. Third parties didn't like it.

The wii u was never positioned as a secondary console until after it was beaten by both the ps4 and Xbox one (it was damage control).

Third parties never had power on the wii u (except for Ubisoft which is why they were the most supportive). That was the biggest reason why Bethesda and ea left.

nintendo designed a console with a gimmick in mind, not for developers (much less third parties). Therefore all third parties left and took their respective fanbases with them
