Xbox division has been making a profit since 2008 overall. They are in the red mainly due to the OG xbox, but it is projected after a few years they will turn a profit overall and it's gravy from there. Microsoft is being smart and increasing their install base. Sony biggest mistake ever was the ps3. Not just because of the huge amount of money they loss (which cancled the ps2 and ps1 profits single handely), but gave Microsoft a foot in the door. Once Microsoft has a foot in the door it is already over pretty much. Why do you think Apple fought tooth and nail to keep zune out of the market? They know iPod would lose a lot of market share and perhaps lose in the long run if Microsoft got a foot in the door. Sony isn't so lucky now.

Yeah, Sony is only 50% of home consoles for 8the gen and has, worldwide, outsold Xbox in every generation it has appeared. Poor, unlucky Sony.
