Well. To be fair, Hearthstone doesn't really tell you anything. Only a few character names and creatures, no story or anything.

Sure, but any familiarity at all is going to help put the pieces together. I don't have any real direct connection to anything Warcraft, but because I know the essence of these sorts of things I expect to get this movie more than someone who's only exposure to Orcs and "DnD style fantasy" has been LOTR/Hobbit movies. The fact that someone knows Heathstone exists and is familiar enough with the game to recognise some names is quite a lot really.
