Nah. You didn't need any prior knowledge. It was a simple good vs evil concept, which was easy to grasp, friend that I took to watch it found it easy to catch on and recognized a few of the character names from Hearthstone.

It's interesting how badly it has done in the USA, it's a Chinese-backed film and is doing extremely well in Asian country's. Hoping for a sequel to be honest.

I dunno, seems like a few people/reviewers had some issues with it seeming like prior knowledge is important to really get the movie. And even your friend knows a bit of stuff from Hearthstone, so they are not going in completely cold.

Well. To be fair, Hearthstone doesn't really tell you anything. Only a few character names and creatures, no story or anything.
