America's always been divided, but honestly the state of today is still probably better than what it was in the past, though I would say the phenomenon of the "mass shooting" which has been popularized since Columbine it seems is quite frightening.
In a weird way I think all the news coverage given to mass shootings perputates the certainty that more will happen.
Maybe I'm just wrong but I don't recall so many mass shootings in the 70s and 80s before 24 hour news really took off.
