Normally a console can sell between 80-120m if its a sony console. They've sold 40m so far, so I think its too early to say they have shot themselves in the foot when there is so much scope for selling more.

I think the reason Phil Spencer was moaning about .5 consoles was that sony has again pulled a fast one over MS. They were hoping Sony were going to do a normal 5-8 year console release, they would then make a new powerful console and release it at the end of 2017. The difference in specs between the PS4 and a XB2 would have been big enough for people to care and upgrade, and MS thought, hah we'll be out first we a new console. What they didnt consider was that Sony already thought the console needed a refresh and that rightly so even 5 years is too long for a new console. If Sony bring out the console this year, MS will have lost a year, rather than gained a year and the games will continue to work, and the gap will be not that substantial enough for people to upgrade.

What I dont get is why people think 5 years is an acceptable timeframe, thats alot of time, and lifewise you age alot in 5 years :(

I think the .5 upgrade is a perfect way to continue to provide a refresh of hardware, even if its only a minor upgrade, because it allows companies to consider new tech sooner rather than waiting another 5 or 8 years before they can introduce it and find out tech has moved on again.

How many years did it takes to make games like The Elder Scrolls, GTA, Resident Evil (the main ones), Final Fantasy ?, it takes Several years and isn't like Mobile or PC where you can change the specs and you have a lot of options if something don't work well.

You want people to purchase consoles even before they have launched the games ?.

I'll be buying one, because i know it will mostly play the current games and all games from September. I want a faster console if i can have it... I am pretty sure there will be lots of others who feel the same. But I dont understand what that has to do with your statement on games, if you are making a PS4 game now, you'll have a small upgrade dev process to make it work... omg that sounds terrible. Not anything like the hassles of PS2 to PS3, and PS3 to PS4 dev swap overs. If you have ever worked in a games studio working on a game for a new gen, you'll know this is nothing like that and no problem if you are making a game on the consoles right now.

On a business note, do you feel they should have waited 1 year for MS to release a brand new console in 2017 or wait until 2018. It's very easy to sit on the sidelines saying they shouldnt do it, but unfortunately there are many reasons why they have to.
