This is not really new technology. The use of external GPUs (eGPUs) was previously possible through the now ancient expresscard interface and now thunderbolt 3 (as shown in this video). In fact, many Nvidia cards and even previous AMD/ATI cards have been used in eGPU configurations. My primary concerns with this rumor is the cost of implementing thunderbolt (although I guess Nintendo and whoever is providing their chips could create a proprietary PCI-E passthrough), power consumption and overall feasibility issues (with the assumption that a portable NX is about the same size as a 3DS XL).
