Man charged for beating wife's would-be rapist to death

There was definitely no reason to kill him when he was in the hallway, unless he was attacking someone. Doesn't sound like he was. And even if he was actively trying to rape his wife when he arrived, killing him would've been too harsh. There's a reason the justice system exists, and it is so that individuals don't try to take justice in their own hands. If you take justice into your own hands, you're a criminal yourself and deserve to be punished.

I'm not saying the guy shouldn't have done anything. I'm saying killing the would-be rapist is overreacting.
