A parent should not be allowed to choose the gender of their child. It is all based on the comfort level of the person as their gender. Not the parents wanted a boy so they'll treat their daughter like a boy.

Should parents also not be allowed to choose a name for their child, whether or not they should go to school, whether or not they should play outside or sit at home gaming, whether or not to put themselves in harms way or know how to be safe and so on? Why is gender suddenly exempted from every other social behaviour?

@bold, no, a parent should deffinitely not be allowed to choose wether or not their kid goes to school. Absolutely not. School should be (and is most places in the western world) mandatory.

No one would have to choose gender identity if there were no cultural gender roles in society. But changing society into a genderblind one (not sex-blind or genitalia-blind, but gender-blind) might be harder than for those who feel they don't fit into their gender to change it. Still, I think these cultural gender roles are the real problem. if girls could act like they want and boys could act like they want without being considered a "girly-boy" or a "boyish girl" then it would hardly matter, except for those who want to have an operation to change their genitalia (which I agree is a decision that you shouldn't be able to take before you are 18.)
