This does not appear to answer to a market trend or consumer needs.
The threat is the death of home consoles in the next generation, and with it the loss of revenues from software distribution / publishing / platform fees; coming from more modular pcs and short lived mobile phones.
A upgradeable modular console platform, where user can add Ram, upgrade cpu/gpu, practically every 12 months could be a serious resistance against that menace. And this is where they are going with the Nintendo eXpandable platform project.
Of course software price is still an issue.
