I've been concerned for quite some time that this could prove to be a huge dud... When you see the full complement of characters and the portion of Warcraft's history they're trying to tell, that's just faaar too much to introduce and do justice for in a single film.

That and the majority going to see the film won't have played the MMO let alone all those reviewing the film. The film has to be based off of the MMO's story driven lore, so reviewiwers saying "well it should be able to stand on it's own legs" doesn't even know how WoW works, if it were to tell a completely different story then it simply wouldn't be WoW and like the majority of video game movie adaptations, they all diverted away from the source lore material and they all ended up flopping one way or another.

Video game movies for the most part just won't click with the casual audience who don't know nor play any of the games the movies are based on. I expect Creed to also suffer and from the looks of the trailer, the movie itself seems to be stepping away from how the story started with the first game, a sign that already shows of a bad film adaptation.

I like WoW and it's world/lore, so bad movie or not I'm still going to go watch it with a few mates.

Making a video game adaptation that only gamers will "get" is a guaranteed way to get a financial and critical flop, unless you limit the budget to below $50 million, or so and at least have a chance at get a movie that makes a profit. Resident Evil is pretty much the only financially successful video game franchise because it's relatively low budget and can profit from only really attracting the RE fanbase and a few extras who will more or less see any horror/zombie movie. So if you are looking to adapt a video game you either have to expect a low audience and budget accordingly, or use the name and characters from the video game only and make an original movie which has broader appeal.

The problem with Warcrraft is that it automatically has limited audience appeal because it has "cartoon" Orcs in it, including a sexy lady orc. The general audience who only know orcs from LOTR are going to think the WoW orcs are just lame. So this was only ever going to appeal to gamers in general at best, and Warcraft fans at worst. They should have budgeted accordingly. Problem is, if you want to do the fanservice and do orcs with the look and feel of WoW, orcs then you are locked into expensive CGI, which means budget is going to exceed realistic box office expectations. If someone did an actual analysis of who's realistically going to watch this movie, and how much is it going to cost to make a visually decent movie, then the project would have been refused before it even got started. The numbers just don't add up.
