It's not like we haven't had weaker consoles in the same gen as stronger in the past. The NeoGeo, for instance, towered over the Genesis/Snes etc, but it got lumped into the 4th gen right along with them.
If I had to vote on the easiest solution, it would be this:
Gen 8
-Wii U
-Ps4
-Xbox1
Gen 8.5
-PS4 Neo
-Xbox upgrade
-Nx
Really, the release of these upgrades for the PS4 and Xbox1 will actually kind of clean things up for us a bit in terms of grouping them. I sincerely doubt NX will warrant being considered a gen 9 console. |
There is nothing to clean up. NX is 9th gen and only new consoles from competitors can be 9th gen consoles too, new models of existing hardware can't. Just use a brain cell or two.

Some people feel generations should be defined largely by the strength of the hardware, but so far it's had more to do with timing. The Nintendo consoles have fallen out of sync with the other two, so it complicates things to a degree. The two upgraded consoles can't be considered a new generation, but the Nx, both in power and timing, matches them almost perfectly. It's difficult, then, to suggest that the 9th generation should start with the Nx when these three seem so perfectly tied to one another in the two most important ways.
