Cause one of the ways that Nintendo makes money is through software sales... A good number of people who are gonna buy the NX are going to be Nintendo fans and they are the ones who are also going to buy games like MK, SSB, Mario 3d, etc etc etc. Now if people save their free game for those, suddenly, Nintendo is losing loads of sales they otherwise would have gotten if they didn't have that deal... And suddenly, the development costs would outweigh the profits and considering those big games generally sell a craycray amount, it would not be worth it.

And not to mention, Nintendo is a business and the investors would facepalm if its for the entire life of the console due to that. They would basically be giving out their big game for free. But if they leave it within a limited time frame, then they wouldn't be losing profits in their big hitters because they would time it accordingly.

It's one game. You can't get Smash and Kart, only one of them. If you get Smash you have to buy Kart and vice versa, literally no different from bundles currently except you have way more choice in what that one game you get is. This also means the lost profits is spread thin across the NX's entire library so no single game should suffer much sales lost.
