I'm talking about the entire generation not just 97. I think the first Jedi Knight was out by then but I don't remember the campaign all that well. But as you said, Quake was out and the multiplayer in that game blew away Goldeneye's multiplayer. When people talk about Goledeneye they usually go on and on about how fun it was to play locally with friends but games like Quake did multiplayer better. Also, the controls is another issue I have with them. Goldeneye (and Perfect Dark) were incredibly good games for their time but they both were gimped by the incredibly weird design of walking and aiming with the same stick. That made them so annoying to play compared to other N64 games that did it right (Turok) and almost unplayable comared to mouse look games. Still blows anything on the PS1 out of the water though. |
Nah, in terms of combined single player anddd multiplayer, as in a complete game, there was nothing at the level of Goldeneye out at that point. Not even on PC. You can debate Quake but many would argue it was not as smooth or enjoyable
In my eyes the single player mode arguably outshined multiplayer in Goldeneye anyway. Incredibly high quality levels, missions, options, cheats, etc
