Angela Merkel didn't have anything to do with the persecution of the Jewish population. Still, she has apologized for Germany's actions during WW2 because it meant a lot for many people that found it easier to move on constructively afterwards. |
I disagree with having people apologizing for something they are blameless in because it's an empty gesture. It just pours salt into it. If a person was directly a part of what happened then I'm all for them apologizing. It's not something their descendents or fellow countrymen should have to apologize for especially if it happened a long time ago.
