| FaithRaven said: Analogy doesn't work here that good. Blizzard did with WoW exactly what Nintendo done with the Wii. Everquest boom is a small fart compared to what WoW have done. Except that the analogy of a heavy-hitter in the industry being dethroned fits perfectly. Blizzard is not a company with ups and downs like Nintendo, Sony etc so thats why the analogy isn't working. Blizzard had only ups, always. And unlike most of those other companies that put out a dozen IPs yearly, how many does Blizzard put out? What do you think Blizzard would be doing had WoW not taken off like it did? In the present Blizzard is the only developer who can spend almost unlimited funds and time on its games. Yep, WoW has ensured this. Whatever company is going to make a MMO now they will have to do in 2-3 years with a strict budget what Blizzard have done in 5+ years with a much higher budget. So thats why it will be hard, really hard for another company to make a more succesful game than WoW. You act like it's never happened before. Not all the big players in the industry were always thus. All it takes is for one developer to put the right spin on an old idea or come out with a completely new way of thinking to turn the entire industry on its head. In consoles and games that don't receive content updates things restarts so all developers start with about equal changes again. In MMOs it's like with operating systems. Who can make now from stratch a better OS than Microsoft have done in so many years ? Ubuntu's initial release was in 2004 and look at where they are now. Its popularity has gone through the roof since they positioned themselves as the user-friendly linux distro. They're not going to outfight the giant that is Microsoft anytime soon but they're carving a niche for themselves. Also, if anything, Red Hat's strong presence in the server market proves that there is room for many. |
