The 1st party games are undeniably good and have a proven track record of mass appeal. If Nintendo were 3rd party, many more people would buy Nintendo games - they would be fully capable of crushing the likes of EA, Ubisoft, Square, and Activision if they wanted to badly enough. Everything else exceedingly great, good, and unannounced that we were supposed to get in the later years of WiiU got moved to NX. Just about everything left for WiiU this past year has this quality of being taken out of the oven too soon. Pokken Tournament isn't even 720p. TPHD isn't nearly as impressive as it should be. Star Fox Zero is Star Fox Zero. Mario Tennis is missing features. Animal Crossing: amiibo festival is straight up dull. Even Splatoon shipped as a not-yet-finished game. When Nintendo puts out an ambitious new Zelda, 3D Mario, Mario Kart, Smash Bros - all gamers want in. But the fact they're on a console such as the WiiU isn't just enviable, it's pitiful. These great IPs deserve a better platform. The pitiful platform by and large gets pitiful games. Newer IPs capable of the same greatness deserve a better platform. I'll always beleive that the Wii U's library is underwhelming, however you're right that people not wanting to buy the system just to play these games is also an issue. I agree that they would sell way more if their games were available on Steam. People get pretty up in arms whenever anyone suggests such a thing, but it economically makes sense. I barely know anyone with a Wii U, but basically everyone I know would buy stuff like Smash and Zelda if they had the chance. A system is just not worth the money when you only want a handful of games.
