I noticed that Wii U modding has been starting to become more relevant, first with Smash Wii U, now this.
I never really considered save scumming cheating when used solely for gear, due the the pure random factor making it hard to get the right gear you want.
I might look into this method, considering I'm already intersted in Smash mods.
