I'm still going to say: Modding the actual original console. Will always be better, than even if someone makes perfect identical hardware. It be cool if these guys just sold the CPU and PPU chips, and can install them into a broken NES. If what you say is true. They are that 100% identical. And aren't an emulator. Why does this thing only output upto 720p? The Hi-def nes does all current standards.

And the NES/Famicom are the easiest systems to mod, compared to later Nintendo systems. As long as you can work on electronics.

Drop-in boards have been suggested by others for a later date, although case modifications on the NES would have to be done for the outputs, which seems to go against the goal of the project - a ready-to-play, accurate HDMI NES out of the box.

From what I understand, 720p was selected because it is a perfect multiple of the NESs 240p native output. With 720p, the AVS is acting more line a line-doubler than a scaler. In this case, it actually just renders three copies of each pixel horizontally and vertically, which is why the image is so icredibly sharp, and has none of the undesirable visual traits of an upscaled SD image.

The case modification for Kevtris' Hidef nes is a quater inch slot cut were the shells meet, on the top loader. Real quick. Front loader, is a bit more annoying. You have to cut where the AC out sticker is. These aren't a real big deal.

Restricting it to 720p. Because of that reason, is still not a good idea. What about people who don't care about even scaling. And just want the game to run at their TV's max screen. So it doesn't have to do the res change switch. Give people as many options as possible. I like the AVS idea. But I wish they went with top loading for NES carts. And just came with a adapter, for Fami games.
