I saw one of the directors of Captain america in youtube giving some insight into the killing of characters that should help you understand.
Killing off a character is killing off all the revenue they bring. They are like workers really.
So, don't expect popular characters to be killed off. Not for long anyways or with some other underlying issue.
Only small characters are elligible to be killed off.
