Only Xbox 360 and PS3 were succesfull in the core gaming market, Wii sold primarily to casuals. Wii created it's own market really, though it dissappeared very quickly aswell.

"The Wii sold primarily to casuals" is perhaps the most persistent myth in gaming over the past decade. There's plenty of evidence suggesting that a majority of Wii owners were so-called "core" gamers. That's not to say there wasn't a non-trivial periphery demographic of people who don't normally buy consoles, but rather that said demographic was not the bulk of the Wii's audience. At best, they maybe make up a third of all Wii owners in the West.

The fact that a lot current PS4 and XBone users hade a Wii does not mean it catered to that specific market. Most of them bought it for party/motion control games. Wii-U's low sales that continue the trend of ever lower sales for Nintendo consoles proves this, and it proves that three systems can't trive in the core console market.
