Nintendo might been busy changing Sheik in Smash, but fact is Sheik was a person referred as a "man" by both Princess Pluto and the Official Guide, that had manly grunts, used japanese pronouns for male when speaking and is physically different than Zelda. That's actually what says the most over anything, really.
But sure, if you want to use the Sheik in Smash as proof of anything, go ahead. Bear in mind that Smash isn't canon in Zelda's history, especially since the developer is different than the original creator of OoT, the same way as you discredit the manga approved by Anouma for being a separate vision.
