Marketing budget may be in the production budget. They should have been in festivals to rack up more viewer interest. Perhaps the film was whack. It is very painful considering the amount of time the artists have spent to make it possible.

The film looks great from the previews but critics panned it. Fan reviews have been more positive and I tend to give the fans more credibility. Regardless, I don't think Sony had much confidence in the IP with respect to film so they gave it to Rainmaker.

Game-to-movie titles have not been doing great. The highest a game-to-movie title made was $336mil by Prince of Persia with a budget between $150-200mil which is just broken even by the rule of thumb. Though others Silent hill, Maxpayne, Resident evil, Need for Speed($66mil budget and makes $202mil) their budgets aren't big. Sony knew the outcome of these and had to give the rights to someone else. Hopefully, world of warcraft film should bring mor hope.
