It's probably no easier to play than Super Mario World.  The biggest obstacle to understanding how to play it might be the buttons that will go unused on the controller; they might cause confusion in a person such as what you describe.

2D platformers are WAY simpler for newcomers, I think, compared to 3D ones -- even though LBP's platforming will have depth.
