NSMBU was pretty bad launch title for Wii U, 3D Mario is far bigger game that has much stronger impact and that brings lots attention to platform, espacily in 1st year. No, historically  2D mario always sells better than 3D mario. Always! 2D mario is pretty much the only thing selling the Wii U at launch.  When Super Mario 3D world came out it didn't even put the wii U up YOY for most of the time period. 2D mario has the history of breaking records. 3D  mario doesn't do that. The closes was mario 64
