Not the same thing at all. The 360 launch was purely strategic... M$ wanted to get the jump on Sony by launching a year early, and be the first on the market with an HD, broadband ready console right out of the box, complete with revamped Xbox Live network that realized the full potential of online gaming on consoles. The OG Xbox served its purpose and was fairly successful in its 4 years on the market, but M$ knew that the future was with the 360, and they were right.

Nintendo on the other hand has no choice launching the NX so soon because the Wii U failed to take off despite its year-long head start, and now the console has both feet in the ground. The console won't even come close to the GC's final sales numbers, which by the way the OG Xbox beat in less than 4 years on the market, and the Wii U has barely managed HALF of the OG Xbox's LTD sales thus far.

No point in keeping a dead console on life support for Nintendo, just pull the plug and move on.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.
