You were wrong in general that Nintendo had any faith in the Wii U.
They didn't. And quite frankly they shouldn't have. This isn't about making friends, this is just a cold, hard business, and the Wii U quite frankly needed to be taken out behind the barn and shot.
The longer the Wii U was allowed to live the more damage it would do to Nintendo's brand and the more useless resources it would gobble up if Nintendo supported it seriously.

And if they don't plan NX's future better, they could find themselves in the same spot as the Wii U for another 4 and a half years. Waiting those 3 months could make all the difference in the world.
We'll see though.
