Actually, that shortcut on Maple Treeway is awesome.
I found it on my first trip there, but didn't understand how to use it. Now, I have learned that if you come from the left and slide in, release your boost, and wheelie, the mud doesn't really stop you at all. As the rest of the track is shorter, and with boosts, it can save you 2-3 seconds!
On the 1st lap, you should only slide, as that will normally make you get a 10th place (or so) item, and end out in the tunnel at 2nd or 3rd (rarely first).
If you recieved a golden mushroom, you've almost won the race already.
