Still, despite being the land of handhelds, they both sure struggled a bit this gen. 3DS barely a quarter of the DS, and the PSVita.....a tenth of the PSP? Some land of the handheld JApan turned out to be :P

i tried looking it up, PS2 had sold 10 million in Japan as of July 2002 which was 28 months after launch.
