Well, I didn't play Fates yet (and what I've read overall from players is not that good), but Awakening was a critical and commercial success, and is still my biggest video games disappointment.... Maybe ever?
The cost of turning a niche game into a popular one has been far too heavy for some original fans. Fire Emblem post-Awakening is basically a different series, too much changes and almost a different genre (at least a different focus, not on strategy and the battles anymore but on the eugenics/harem management). Fates Conquest is supposed to be closer to a real FE, so I'll maybe play it when it comes to EU. But yes, I can understand why someone would call Fates a disappointment. |
As a long time Fire Emblem fan, I definitely recommend Conquest at least. The new mechanics add a lot of depth to the game, and the game is challenging enough that I had to bring the difficulty down to Normal on my first playthrough. It plays a lot more like Blazing Sword or the Radiant games rather then Sacred Stones or Awakening, which is something that really pulled me in.
I haven't tried out the other games, but I've heard Revelations is also well done.
Anyways, @OP: I don't have an opinion one way or the other. Intelligent Systems has done well with the frachise lately, so I don't know if it really warrants any major changes. Personally though, I feel like Sakurai's talent lies more with gameplay rather than story content, which is something I'd like more of a focus on for the franchise.
