It's kind of how they have always done things. Even when they were a tiny little company getting a giant IBM contract.
Remember when PS2 was king? What did MS do? They gave developers great tools - and the Xbox 360 grew a huge market for them. Now, they are giving developers more options and devices for their products. Microsoft does well by working with just about everybody (or absorbing them.)
Sure Steam will still be around. But more Steam users use Windows 10 than the typical computer population. Steam is fine as a 3rd party Windows platform. We are all still waiting for their mighty SteamOS and super gaming platform.
