Makes sense financially I'm sure, since the game has been an incredible success on Wii U despite its relatively small userbase, but from a gamer perspective I'd prefer them to either work on a sequel or a brand new game, not a port of an existing game.

I don't think it'll be an issue. Naughty Dog ported TLoU and the Uncharted Collection. I think the situation is that they are porting Splatoon because they can't get a new game out quickly enough.
