Well Splatoon was created by EAD Group 2 which is also responsible for Animal Crossing, Wii Sports & Nintendo Land.

There hasnt been a mainline Animal Crossing since 2012 so one is due soon and its very possible that they also making a new casual game like Wii Sports/Nintendo Land to make use of whatever type of new controller they have.

I dont know if they can work on those two titles while also developing a new built from the ground up Splatoon so an enhanced port would make sense in that case.

Well, you are right.But Splatoon didnt take long to develop at first place(a bit more than 1 year).And given the success of Splatoon, I dont think Nintendo will hold off long to make the sequel.
