I think they announced it now intentionally and they had the right idea in doing so. I also don't think many people will wait around for the sequel for obvious reasons!
#1.LostWinds is one of only 6-launch titles. It has very little competition and anyone getting WiiWare day one would have likely bought it.
#2.LostWinds visually looks better then all but FinalFantasy making it again stand out and gamers want a game that stands out.
#3.A Lost Winds sequel announced hot on the tail of the origional is going to get it more attention. Because when the sequel is released it won't have the advantage that the origional has had regardless of distribution format Wiiware or disk!.
#4.Any sales loss will be minimal because by know the title has sold enough copies to break even I am pretty sure. Meaning the worst thing that can happen is that the sequel under performs compared to the origional!
In other words I think it was a very smart marketing ploy. Using the origional like a demo to market a sequel. Announcing the sequel so soon they are going to ride the origionals success regardless of whether the sequel is WiiWare or full fledged disk based game!
