Their IPs are still as big as ever. Mario, Pokémon, and Zelda are still household names, I mean just look at Mario Kart 8 and all the odds that game is defying in order to reach the sales figures it's achieving.
Pokémon and Zelda are celebrating their 20th and 30th anniversaries this year!
It's their hardware that's irrelevant.
You think people don't love or care for Mario and co. anymore? Of course they do, it's the Wii U they don't give a crap about.
If you were to ask someone they'd easily tell you who Mario is or that they know him, but if you asked if they're interested in a Wii U, they'd most likely say no.
And since they don't care about the hardware, they're not going to buy it, the software sales are going to take a hit as a result, which would suggest that their franchises aren't relevant anymore, but they still are.
