I think it all comes down to the kind of audience they target. Nintendo as a company have stayed focused either on the traditional younger gamers that like Mario or more niche, hardcore experiences like Xenoblade style RPGs, maybe some horror games here and there.
TBH Mario Kart still moves big numbers, though Nintendo could do with making new IPs that target the western 3rd party audience, since that's where most gamers are.

It's the lack of games that could interest 3rd party gamers, exclusive to a Nintendo platform that really prevents gamers from buying into a Nintendo system now.

Stuff like The Witcher, Gears, Uncharted, God of War. More shooters, genres that are a bit more grounded in reality, instead of fantasy would help to move platforms and that would have a knock on effect in how many people buy other Nintendo games.
Maybe Mario and co would sell even better if Nintendo had more new IPs that bring the western 3rd party gamers to their system, because those people would already own the system and may be interested to try something different.

Do you think Splatoon is kind of the first step in that direction? Also, you mention God Of War, so would Bayo 2 also kind of fall in there? I think there was at one point a very clear push (namely the first year or two), but those types of gamers weren't biting.

Splatoon isn't really a grounded, realistic experience, with style of art or setting. Bayonetta is pretty different asthetically to God of War, more anime than semi-realistic.

TBH I think if Nintendo made more games like Wave Race, F-Zero, Pilot Wings, Metroid, etc that could be a good move, since they're pretty different from the cartoon like or more niche style games we tend to see on Nintendo's platforms.

Bayonetta wasn't something originated exclusively on a Nintendo platform either, so it going to another platform, exclusively had a negative effect. If Nintendo made something like that or they made a new IP with a 2nd party studio, in a more realistic setting it would fit the bill of what I'm talking about. I think Scalebound, Horizon, The Last of Us, Mirror's Edge, basically all kinds of games like those coming exclusivey to a Nintendo platform would definitely drive the 3rd party audience back to a Nintendo platform.

Nintendo needs to widen their styles. They could even make a realistic racer, like a GT or Forza Horizon.

I haven't seen Nintendo do what I'm talking about. Nintendo could test out the idea of trying this with indie projects, then if those sell well expand sequels into AA or AAA projects.
