Seems to be selling well if preorders are anything to go by - if Nintendo wait until PSVR is released and they sit back for a year without doing anything, they'd lose precious time. Plus, what do you think Nintendo should do with its next console? |
Well preorders aren't anything to go by. Preorders selling out is nice, but that only has meaning if we know the allocation. Also, niche products may have high preorders but relatively low sales afterwards, like with JRPG games often do.
As for what Nintendo should do... I dunno. I agree with you that there needs to be a selling point beyond power, but VR is not it. VR seems like a niche product to me. It's fine for what it is, but it's years before it's going to be a mainstream thing if it ever gets there. It's especially a poor fit for Nintendo's audience. Nintendo excels in local multiplayer, which VR isn't great for as of now, and kids, whose parents wouldn't want them wearing a TV screen on their eyes. Aside from this, it doesn't really gel with Nintendo's software. Some games, Mario Kart, Zelda, Metroid could be fun with VR, but VR won't add much to things like Mario Bros or any of Nintendo's casual leaning stuff.
I still think Nintendo's best chance for success is evolving the Wii concept (which the Wii U didn't really do).
