Most of the newer Amiibo releases are basically pallete swaps right? Every single Mario Amiibo allows for the same funtionality in all games, right? Woolly Yoshi and normal yoshi are still functionally the same. Where they stepped over the line is that 30 year anniversary Mario that doesn't have parity with the other Marios. Until that they didn't 'force' you into buying the same character again at least.

I have one of those. Aside from Mario Maker, I'm pretty sure it works like any other Mario amiibo on the other games.

Yeah, but my point was that other Marios don't work the same in Mario Maker. They locked an additional function behind a new figurine of the same character, wich they hadn't previously done.
