Russia has faught ISIS the whole time. They have also attacked other rebel groups. It seems Russia understands that Assad moving out would create a major power vacuum. Its a matter choosing the devil you know over the one you dont.

Assad may be bad. But it does not take much of an imagination to picture something worse coming into power in that part of the world.

Of course Putin likes Assad. Assad is much like Putin. Besides the Assad regime is a significant client of Russia buying munitions and petroleum products from them.

The West Also liked assad. Sure he is a dictator like so many but he had an country where people could live together and their were minor issues between Cristians/Muslims and others groups. It was also popular by tourists and had a steady economic growth. Sure their were issues but people were expecting a nice future... I don't like that Russia works together with Assad but don't like the hypocrisy of the West Either.

See to Libya we worked years with Qaddafi, and we applauded when people got rid of him....And then we let the population suffer, the people are so pissed against the west.....   Isis loved it and send some people to gather soldiers to fight with ISIS but the hate was so big against the West that ISIS just stayed and opened a new Isis branch in Libya and in no time took over parts of the country and has now thousands of soldiers.

What is even worse that the West asked Libian forces to stop the refugees boats while ISIS is loving this and sends refugee boats and don't stop them and only ask some amount of money that will be invested in ISIS.
