Of course they're pointless, that's why they happen so often. If something is pointless and has no benefits then it's only natural that people will repeat it over and over again.
It's the same with micro transactions and preorder bonuses. There are so many of them because they just don't work.
If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.
