From my limited knowledge, Switzerland is the only country in the world (at least that I know of out of the rich ones) that has semi-direct democracy (and direct in two cantons), so passing laws that people actually support and want is actually possible....guess more countries should adopt that system.
As for corruption, where there's a living human, there's potential for it.
