I did exactly that, because I was curious (before reading your comment btw. :P) and the result of my exterimentation was, that it varies extremely if you can see the light reflect of whatever you put on there, depending on surrounding lightsources and the material of the object.
Darker objects with smooth surfaces reflect the lighter objects on screen best but otherwise don't show much in the way of being lit up. While white objects with matte surfaces show....nothing. Seriously. It might be neccissary to mention that I did not change my phones brightness specifically for this, so it was on a medium brightness.
Not saying you're wrong, this could be a well made fake, but the fact that the sticks aren't obviously lit up is not the reason neccissarily.
