Nintendo has made hardware and software that produces 2 images at 60Hz since 2011 with the release of 3DS.
The Wii U also produces two pictures, one for the TV and one for the gamepad. They have produced some games where at least the TV picture is 1080 60Hz.
This makes them well prepared to make VR games.
As mentioned they have had very much experience with motion control, which is also integrated into the gamepad.
The gamepad straped to your face weighs 491 grams (OR = 470 grams, Vive = 555 grams). It has a superfast proprietary wireless connection based on IEEE 802.11n and does not require a lot of cables as other VR gears.
The gamepad screen is 6.2 inch (PSVR = 5.7).
Resolution and some other things have to be improved, but the Wii U is built with four year old technology and should be possible to improve.
